Vast increases in data generation by e-Science applications, along with advances in computation, storage and communication, affect the nature of scientific research. During this decade, crossing the “Peta” line is expected: Petabyte in data size, Petaflop in CPU processing, and Petabit/s in network bandwidth.

Performance analysis of data grid using GridSim communications architecture in support of grid computing
The GridSim firstly summarizes and defines data grid models and the process of job scheduling, simultaneously analyzes the time and cost of job execution in the data grid. The job scheduling strategy influences the QoS of the data grid immediately and then proposes a design proposal of the job scheduling simulator of data grid based on a grid simulator named GridSim and introduces the architecture, process and key technologies of the job scheduling simulator. By using this simulator we can determine the resource failure so that the performance of the data grid can be analysed. This involves implementation of job scheduling in a grid for handling resource failure using GridSim simulator. Moreover, the resources may suffer failures, and all of this obviously would affect the performance received by the users. In this paper we present an extension to one of the most popular grid simulators GridSim to support variable resource availability. Through which the overall performance can be determined. Finally, it proves that this scheduling simulator can satisfy the need of research on the data grid optimization in Grid Computing.

The suggested procedure means that a newly developed algorithm can implement the schedule grid task while accounting for priorities and deadlines to decrease the completion time required for the tasks. The average waiting time of the grid environment can be minimized, and this minimization, in turn, creates an increase in the throughput of the environment.

GUISET:Design Of Grid-Based Portals For E-Commerce On-Demand Services communications architecture in support of grid computing
This work presents a framework for the design and development a grid-enabled portal prototype for a Grid-based Utility Infrastructure for SMME-enabling Technology (GUISET) initiative – a utility computing platform. The GUISET portal has been designed to cater for both the traditional grid requirements and some of the relevant additional requirements for utility computing contexts. It’s based on various relevant techniques and technologies used in grid-enabled portal designs. This include: Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), Component-Based development (CBD), Utility Computing, Grid technologies and Web 2.0. The portal prototype is built using Liferay 5.2.3 portal tool kit bundled with Tomcat 6.0.18 as the core components adopted for the implementation. An evaluation of the grid-enabled portal prototype was conducted using a set of benchmark requirement standards, and also the usability evaluation of the portal prototype in a controlled experiment by a group of experienced users. The result of the evaluation of the GUISET portal prototype using a set of benchmark requirements (standards) revealed that it fulfilled the minimum requirements to be suitable for the utility context.

Collaborative research has facilitated the development of distributed systems that provide users non-trivial access to geographically dispersed resources that are administered in multiple computer domains. The term grid computing is popularly used to refer to such distributed systems. Scientific simulations have traditionally been the primary benefactor of grid computing. The application of this technology to simulation in industry has, however, been negligible. Design & Implementation of a Fiber Optic Communications Laboratory communications architecture in support of grid computing
This study is on the development of a remote Fiber Optic Communications laboratory. The system developed was based on the iLabs Shared Architecture. This architecture is a three-tiered platform that enables development, deployment and sharing of online experiments, as a supplement to conventional laboratories. The core objective of the research was to extend the functionality of the iLabs Shared Architecture to support experimentation in Fiber Optic Communications. A functioning prototype of the Interactive iLabs Architecture was implemented, and experiments in Bidirectional Fiber Optic Link and Wavelength Division Multiplexing design and tested. They were executed on the EMONA FOTEx board, an add-on board to the NI ELVIS II and powered by LabVIEW. Documentation that involved writing of Concept Paper, Proposal, System Requirements‘ Specification Document, Design Specification‘s Document, Research thesis and a scientific paper was also undertaken. This resulted in not only curriculum support through the designed experiments, but also tremendous capacity development in regards to software development, research, writing, organizational and presentation skills.

Agent-based Resource Management for Grid Computing communications architecture in support of grid computing
A computational grid is a hardware and software infrastructure that provides dependable, consistent, pervasive, and inexpensive access to high-end computational capability. An ideal grid environment should provide access to the available resources in a seamless manner. Resource management is an important infrastructural component of a grid computing environment. The overall aim of resource management is to efficiently schedule applications that need to utilise the available resources in the grid environment. In this work, an A4 (Agile Architecture and Autonomous Agents) methodology is introduced for the development of large-scale distributed software systems with highly dynamic behaviours. An agent is considered to be both a service provider and a service requestor. Agents are organised into a hierarchy with service advertisement and discovery capabilities. An Agent-based Resource Management System (ARMS) is implemented for grid computing, based on an existing application performance prediction toolkit PACE. Experimental results show that better load balancing can be achieved among multiple grid resources.
